How Long Before Our Macs Really Talk To Us?

As a bona fide Trekkie of the Classic Order, I’m still waiting for my Mac to learn to talk to me. No, not speak. The Mac can speak, and read text, and the latest Lion voices are excellent. When will the Mac be able to converse with me?

Read4Me Is Not Talk To Me

Using settings in System Preferences > Speech your Mac can recognize your speech in a limited way, and read text to you in some very good voices.

Read4Me is a Mac app that reads documents, and does so in a variety of excellent voices. It’s simple to use. Open up documents in Word, TextEdit, HTML, or from other apps, and Read4Me can read the text in a variety of languages.

Simply grab the Services menu from the app menu, select the text and the voice begins to read. Audio can be recorded and exported to AIFF or AudioBook format to be used in iTunes or transferred to an iPod or iPhone.

Even better, Read4Me shows you how to download additional voices for Mac OS X Lion (and from other sources). These are in many languages, not just English.

Read4Me is not my beloved Star Trek computer. It is a very inexpensive text reader app that works well with Lion’s new voices, and in different languages. Majel Barrett, we need you on our Macs.
