Effects and filters for digital photos are a dime a dozen on the Mac. Sometimes less. Video is a different story. Apple gives users a few video effects in iMovie, but the price of video specialty effects gets expensive quickly.
For the budget conscious, there’s CartoonizerFX. It’s an elegant Mac app that does basic video enhancements to your movies. Here’s what it looks like in action:
Choose from over 10 video effects. These are mostly options that iMovie doesn’t have. The claim to fame is the cartoonizer effect, which over saturates color on a video and gives it a cartoon look.
Other effects might be useful in your collection. These include an aging look, color glow, and old comic styles, spot color adjustments, and others.
Effects are applied in real time, so whatever you choose, you see. Controls are straightforward, though limited. There’s a frame panel to display frame from your movie so you can insert effects at the right location.
Any QuickTime movie or ProRes format can be dropped into Cartoonizer. While the effects are above those in iMovie, you’re not likely to win any cinematic awards for originality.
