There was a time when I was young that I longed to become an artist. A graphic artist. A designer. Even a developer of animated cartoons. It’s probably a good thing I abandoned that career as I would have been the epitome of a starving artist. Literally starving.
Back in the day, artists, designers, and animators were required to have talent. That may still be the case in the digital age, but Mac tools such as Animation Desk make quick work of what once was hours of tedious drawing (not to mention the requirement to have talent).
Apps such as Animation Desk bring easy to use digital tools to anyone with an eye, if not a modicum of talent. This modestly priced app is a Mac version of the very popular Animation Desk for the iPad (and iPhone).
Animation Desk is a digital drawing tool which adds the element of animating actions on the screen. Drawing tools are familiar to anyone who has used a Mac or PC to draw. Pens, pencils, colors, swatches, eraser, layers.
The built-in animation timeline lets you add, delete, move, or reorder frames with simple point and click actions. Every element on the screen can be adjusted in size and edited to get just the effect you need.
Completed animations can be saved and then shared as video clips on YourTube and Facebook. Start a project on your Mac and finish it up later on your iPhone or iPad.
Animation Desk is sufficiently robust that experienced artists will enjoy creating simple animations, and it’s a good way for those new to digital media to get their feet wet (digitally speaking) with new media tools.
This is a good app for storyboarding projects that may require an advanced animation app for full production. There are a few nits to consider. The tools are familiar but limited. Saving seems to take forever once you create more than a few dozen frames.
Otherwise, it’s plain fun with a purpose.
