Color me biased, but I like the grunge look. You know the kind, right? The weathered and distressed photo look. As a photo enhancement style, grunge comes and goes in popularity, but it’s a simple and straightforward way to add a time-honored artistic look to an otherwise plain photo.
Mac users can choose from half a dozen apps which create a grunge look (iPhone users have even more choices), but my favorite is Grungetastic. It may be something of a one-trick pony app, but it’s inexpensive, works well, and there’s an even less expensive but quite capable version for iPhone and iPad.
Here are some examples of the grunge look– from pop to worn to distressed– all easily applied to a photo.
Grungetastic’s interface couldn’t be much easier to use. Drag and drop a photo. Select a Style from the browser below the photo. Use the sidebar Adjust Tab for granular controls over the effects.
Grunge effects are applied to a photo almost instantly, and there seems to be no end to how dirty or grungy a photo can be. Trial and error is your friend.
Grungetastic handles high resolution photos, Preview mode, comes with plenty of ready to go Presets and all adjustments and settings are non-destructive.
If you’re into the distressed, grunge, bleached, worn look, it doesn’t get much easier than this app. The learning curve, Mac or iPhone app, is short, and results are quickly created with little effort.
Because Grungetastic has a full screen mode I would like to see a side-by-side comparison of the original photo and the grunted out distressed photo at the same time. Otherwise, there’s a button in the control panel which toggles the photo from original to grunge effect.
