Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a very good reason. You won’t find many apps to scan and quarantine Mac malware because there just isn’t much Mac malware. On the other hand, Mac users have plenty of ways to add security layers to their Macs. Here’s one that’s rather unique and very good for Macs in a home with many users or family members, as well as a crowded office environment.
It’s called iLock and what it does is simple and effective. To a point.
iLock locks down specific Mac apps so they cannot be used on your Mac without the proper password. Unlike many security apps, iLock is easy to use. Simply drag and drop to iLock the apps you want to lockdown. Then choose a password.
iLock works in the background so once it’s setup and running a thief or hacker or neighbor or relative won’t easily find it. iLock uses AES encryption so the app just won’t open without the password.
Even better, iLock tracks attempts to start a protected app, and can snap a photo of the attempt on Macs with a built-in iSight camera. The iLock window can pop up with a custom keyboard combo Hot Key.
Is iLock foolproof? No. That’s because fools are so ingenious. Even fools who attempt to restart your Mac and login as a Guest user will be foiled. Locked is locked. iLock doesn’t cost much and makes it easy to get specific about which apps on your Mac can be used by others.
