Tera Thomas O’Brien on Apple’s outsized influence over the technology gadget industry:
Quietly, with little fanfare, Apple has pwned the industry’s revenue and profits. Industries? Smartphone, personal computer, tablet, headphones, smartwatch, streaming television, Apple Pay, et al, and Apple is gunning for the talking speaker market, streaming music market, and probably a few others.
How bad is it for Apple’s competitors?
Guesstimators think Apple may account for 50-percent of the smartphone industry’s total revenue, 85-percent of total profits, and all on less than 20-percent of marketshare. Yes, that’s pwned… The story is the same everywhere else. Apple Pay dominates the competition. Apple Watch has no comparison, including the entire Swiss watch industry (the premium end of such devices; usually the same space where Apple plays). Beats headphones may not have the quality sound that audiophiles prefer, but Apple sells more Beats than any other brand.
It’s not about marketshare, it’s profitshare.
